Northland

Superchamps Eliminations were held At Whangarei Squash Club Sunday 18th July 2010

Mens E Grade: Mangakahia played off against Whangarei. That morning one of Mangakahia's players limped in and defaulted his game so they where down to four players with two others out.
With Whangarei having won one game by default they went on to win two more and lost two.
Whangarei 3 Mangakahia 2

Mens D Grade: KeriKeri played Dargaville. Dargaville arrived late having gone to Kamo first by mistake and had three players.
Kerikeri 3 Dargaville 0

The rest where on time and had all the players they needed. Maybe not who they wanted through injury which unfortunately put a few out.

Wellington

C Grade Wrap-Up. Photo's attached.

The largest turn out in years with 10 teams competing brought some very intense competition to the Wellington C Grade Super Champs. Held at the historic and only private CBD club in Wellington, Thorndon Club (open since 1879), the intensity and tension was palpable from the start. And it never let up with the final pairing not decided until the last matches of pool play on the Sunday morning. The final was a spectacular affair with huge pressure throughout. 2-2 going into the last match. Then 2-2 going into the 5th. Then 14-all after a marathon effort finishing with a roller out of the front nick. It doesn't get tougher or tighter than that!

So for the second year in a row, Mitchell Park are the runners-up. What a way to finish for Collegians! In their last year as a club they get to represent Wellington and challenge for National honours.

The Super Champs gets better and better with this year's C Grade event not only the largest for years but one of the best run for years. No event drama's, no tension driven Manager madness. A great vibe in a great location for some great Squash. Thank you Thorndon Club!

Otago

A group of Dunedin pupils will be the youngest squash team to represent the Otago district at a national championships.

The team of Liam Cotton (16), Reuben Fisher (14), Josh Askin (12), Ali Harris (14) and Connor Haggie (17) qualified for the D grade championships in Gisborne in September when it beat Wanaka 4-1 and Omakau 3-2 at the weekend.
Members of the Otago Development squad, the boys are from different clubs and joined together under the Logan Park club colours to qualify.
"They are the youngest team ever to represent the Otago district," Squash Otago's executive officer, Aynsley Munro, told the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

The previous youngest team was the Sunnyvale D grade team that represented the district last year.

It comprised three teenagers and two senior players.

"It will be an exciting time for the boys," Munro said.

"Sixty percent of their opponents will be adults."

Susan Cormick, a parent, said "the boys decided to form a team off their own bat.

They get on so well together and this is what they wanted to do".

Cotton, Fisher and Harris are pupils at Otago Boys' High School, Haggie at Kavanagh College and Askin attends Balmacewen Intermediate.
An additional task over the next two months is to raise the $6300 needed for the trip.
They have already started by washing windows and selling raffles for firewood.
"They will do anything and work at any job to get there," Cormick said.
