Club Canteen Food Ideas

The focus is on high carb and low fat to maximise energy levels for sport and exercise.

Sandwiches
use a variety of breads. Thick slice is best.

Various shapes
club, open, standard, mixed white and whole meal/grain. Instead of margarine or butter use hummus, pickle, chutney, salsa, mustard or low fat mayonnaise.
Rolls (various shapes sizes and types), bagels, pita breads, flat breads, Panini, Turkish bread, Focaccia and other breads.

Toppings/fillings: try combinations

  • Cheese,
  • egg,
  • lean shaved meats or sliced meats (ham, chicken, beef, lamb),
  • fish (tuna or salmon),
  • cottage cheese,
  • gherkins or pickle,
  • salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, sprouts),
  • peanut butter,
  • marmite

American hot dogs
long rolls with frankfurter + salad and/or onion

Mini pizza 
hamburger bun or crumpet or English muffin – top with canned spaghetti and gated cheese and grill.

Toasties
fillings such as spaghetti creamed sweet corn and baked beans. Use thick bread and only a little butter or margarine.

Wraps
various fillings, use low fat or yoghurt dressings

Hamburger
only one meat pattie, no cheese or use low fat cheese slices and lots of salad with low fat or no dressing.

Sushi

Scones
plain or cheese. 

Salads 
pasta, rice, bean, potato, roast vege salad, kumara salad.
Chicken, tuna, salmon, beef or other meat salad with couscous or noodles or bread.

Baked potato 
stuff with Toppings such as:

  • Yoghurt                                             
  • Grated cheese
  • Low fat sour cream                              
  • Cottage cheese
  • Chopped spring onions/onions             
  • Chopped chives               
  • Chopped parsley                                 
  • Chopped red or green peppers    
  • Finely chopped fresh herbs                   
  • Pickle, chutney, relish
  • Chopped gherkins                               
  • Chilli sauce
  • Garlic                                                 
  • Pepper
  • Sliced cooked mushrooms                    
  • Corn – whole kernel or creamed
  • Baked beans/ Mexican beans                
  • Salsa
  • Cooked vegetables                              

Potato Tacos
baked potato topped with chilli beans or baked beans salsa and shredded low fat cheese.

Fries 
Thick Oven Wedges.

Soups and bread

Sweet things...

  • Fruit breads and buns,
  • Iced buns and pink buns -“Sally Lunn”, “Boston Bun”, “Raspberry bun” Pikelets and jam (no cream)
  • Scones - fruit
  • Muffins -fruit
  • Yoghurt, Fresh fruit , Fresh fruit platter or salad

Beverages...

  • Water
  • Milk - plain or flavoured but not “Wave”
  • Sports drink - “Replace” or “Powerade”
  • Juice or cordial.
  • Smoothies
  • Yoghurt drinks
  • You could have a blender on site to make smoothies or have ready to drink ones available.
