Masters Newsletter - March 2010

Canterbury Squash Interclub begins next week which will be a brutal reminder of the amount of training some of us omitted during our off – season antics. It will also bring back memories of what is to come with winter approaching, those frigid nights, sometimes damaged muscles, and dodgy suppers.

However we of course have the bonus of the much maligned and rarely admired par scoring system to assist us, because the nights are sure to be much shorter relevant to game time at least, although the after match functions may compensate.

The main event for the year on a global scene is the World Masters in Cologne, with quite a few New Zealanders travelling to Europe for squash and an associated holiday.

As well there are some ex pats puddle jumping or road travelling to boost our numbers.

A closer to home event for those who may be interested in a more economic squash holiday os the 2010 Norfolk Island Masters Squash Championships. The details for this event are located on the right hand side of the Squash NZ homepage.

On the local scene, the N.Z. Masters in October is being reformatted a little so that there will generally be 8 person draws to enable the individuals to be completed on the Sunday, with the players dinner Sunday night and a late morning start for the teams event on the Monday.

In the event that the strength of entries warrants a 16 person draw, that age group will have 2 games on the Saturday.

This will mean the teams event finishes Wednesday, which we anticipate will encourage more players to put aside time for this prestigious event.

To this end it is important for districts to begin planning to attend and boost flagging team numbers, going to the extent if required of combining with another nearby district where numbers are short in a particular age bracket.

For 2011 there is the probability that the date may also change to September so that this final New Zealand Championship is close to the main playing season.

With regard to the Masters Team event to be held at Lugton Park, Hamilton on the 25-27 June, some old and not so old players from the Christchurch Squash Club have booked flights to attend this event which promises to be a lot of fun (a first for a South Island Team).

I urge other clubs to consider the challenge at a competitive or social level and make it a weekend to remember, with of course the added bonus of the All Blacks vs Wales rugby test to attend on the Saturday night.

I am looking forward to seeing a large variety of players and welcome any feedback.

Masters Grading List
