Double delight for Palmer in Oamaru

Double delight for Abbie Palmer at the South Island Junior Age Group Squash Championships in Oamaru.

The young North Shore player has swept to victory in two different age groups, taking out the prestigious under 19 title as well as the under 17s.

Palmer proved too good for Waimea's Sophie O'Connell in the final of the under 19s, wrapping up the title with an 11-5, 11-4, 11-4 victory.

Not surprisingly, she was also too strong for Southlander Katie Fairweather in the under 17 title decider, winning 15-3, 15-6, 15-6.

Meanwhile, Jackson Beresford has justified his top seeding in the under 19 boys event, claiming the title with a straight games victory in the final.   However, it wasn't all plain sailing against second seeded fellow Cantabrian Joseph Williams, with Beresford having to fight hard to secure an 11-6, 14-12, 15-13 victory.

In the younger age groups, Anna O'Connor and Glenn Templeton added under 13 South Island titles to the under 11 titles they had won in previous years.  Otago's Martha Toghill denied a Templeton family double by beating Katie to take the girls' under 11 title, while Northland's Zoe Dykzeul won the under 15 girls' title.  Quin Udy backed up his success in the under 15s last year by winning the under 17 title, with Temwa Chileshe (Canterbury) and Joe Smythe (Wellington) taking the under 15 and under 11 boys' titles respectively.
