Commonwealth Games: opening day results

So far, so good for the Kiwi contingent in the singles squash event of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Leading New Zealand away were the men, with the first of two matches for the day.  Campbell Grayson (12th seed), Martin Knight (13) and Paul Coll all achieved straight games victories in the Round of 64, to progress safely to the Round of 32 to be played later that day.

In the meantime, opening round women's matches took to the court.  While Megan Craig was too strong for her Kenyan opponent, and Joelle King also cruised to victory against her Jersey opposition, Amanda Landers-Murphy was beaten by eighth seed (and former world number two) Jenny Duncalf in straight sets.  Joelle and Megan will play their Round of 16 matches tomorrow, with Megan up against world number Nicol David on the all glass court in what is sure to be a career highlight.

The men's Round of 32 took place in the evening.  Campbell Grayson continued his smooth progress, with a straight sets win over Bermuda's Micah Franklin.  Martin Knight took four games to account for Scottish hope Kevin Moran in four games, while Paul Coll was beaten 3/0 by fourth seed Saurav Ghosal of India.
