Joelle to play for bronze

Joelle King will play England's Alison Waters for the bronze medal in the women's singles tonight (NZ time)

King was beaten in straight games by world number one and defending Commonwealth champion Nicol David of Malaysia.  David showed why she has reigned at the top of the squash world for eight years now, with a mixture of relentless retrieving and clinical control.  With King offered very few openings, she was forced to take the attack to David, resulting in unforced errors.Joelle King

Nicol David: “I really played well today – but Joelle was really on form.  When you see her on that form, you really have to break it up.  I had to really fight hard. It’s such a great crowd – I just want to get back on that court for the final.  I can’t wait!

“Winning the gold would be the highlight of the year for me – you wait for four years to get this moment.”

Joelle King: “That was horrible.  Nicol really didn’t give me much opportunity.

I’m really disappointed.  All week, I’ve prided myself on not making too many errors – but I guess when you’re playing someone like Nicol, who retrieves so well and comes back at you, it puts that pressure on. I am disappointed that it was in three.”

The second women's semi-final also went to seeding, with world number two Laura Massaro seeing off the challenge of countrywoman Alison Waters in four games to progress to the gold medal match.  Waters and King will play off for the bronze medal at 11pm on Monday night (NZT).
