Bronze for King in Glasgow!

New Zealand number one Joelle King has come away with the women's singles bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Seeded third, King was up against the fourth seeded Alison Waters (England) in the bronze medal playoff.  The two players are separated by only one place in the world rankings, and have shared their last two head to head meetings.  It was therefore particularly impressive that King was able to pull away to a somewhat comfortable 11-7 11-7 11-5 victory.

King's reaction to her win: "One of the most pleasing things about this is the way I've played all week. I really enjoyed myself out there today - I felt able to let go. I loved every second of it - it's amazing what you can do when you relax.Joelle King CWG

"I felt I rose to the occasion.

"I'm really happy to have won a medal and can now look forward to doing better in four years' time - I'm still young enough, aren't I?" said the 25-year-old.

"The crowd and atmosphere is AMAZING and the court is beautiful! I've never played in front of anything like it - and it's been like this all week, with the crowds cheering for both players. I have to say a big thank you to Scotland."

Waters' reaction was brief: "Joelle played well - she was better on the day. It just wasn't my day."

King's feat emulates the achievement of Shelley Kitchen - the last New Zealand player to win a Commonwealth Games singles medal - who won bronze at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.  It also gives King a full set of Commonwealth medals, after winning gold and silver in 2010.

In the women's gold medal match world number one Nicol David was too good for Laura Massaro, winning 12-10 11-2 11-5.  In the men's medal matches it was an England 1-2-3.  Peter Barker saw off the challenge of Saurav Ghosal to take the bronze medal, while Nick Matthew overcame old rival James Willstrop in a marathon 100 minute match 11-9 8-11 11-5 6-11 11-5.

It's now on to the doubles for the Kiwi contingent, with both Kiwi men's doubles combination to appear on the glass court overnight (Lance Beddoes & Paul Coll at 4.30am NZT, with Martin Knight & Campbell Grayson to follow immediately afterwards).  The mixed doubles combinations are scheduled to play from 11.30pm Tuesday night (NZT), and the two women's doubles pairings will be on at 6am Wednesday morning NZT.
