Knight, King through to mixed semi
2 Aug 2014Martin Knight and Joelle King are through to the semi-finals of the mixed doubles in Glasgow.
The second seeds and defending silver medalists overcame an early scare against Indian duo Joshana Chinappa and Harinder-Pal Sandhu to progress to the semi-finals of the mixed doubles in three games (7-11 11-8 11-6). They will next come up against English pair Alison Waters and Peter Barker. With a left-hander in Barker, the English are sure to be a strong pairing thanks to their dual forehands. The semi-final is scheduled for quarter to one on Sunday morning (NZT).
Earlier, Amanda Landers-Murphy and Paul Coll were outplayed by top seeded Australians Kasey Brown and Cameron Pilley, going down 1-11 8-11.
The match of the night was undoubtedly young guns Paul Coll and Lance Beddoes' near upset of James Willstrop and Daryl Selby. After losing a close first set, Coll and Beddoes stormed back to take the second comfortably. They seemed to lose patience in the third, with a run of points taking the English pair to an 8-3 advantage. However the Kiwis showed true fighting spirit, with a mixture of unbelievable retrieving and flair-filled strokeplay getting them back to 8-8. Although they finished within a whisker of the semi-finals, the experience is bound to stand the duo in good stead for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
