First round World Junior Championships results

First round matches at the World Junior Championships in Windhoek, Namibia have been played overnight.  The opening matches were preceded by an opening ceremony which saw all countries converging at Wanderers, the main venue for the tournament.

The New Zealand players found the going tough on the opening day, with only Scott Galloway (Wellington) progressing to the second round, courtesy of his Nigerian opponent not attending the event.WJB team 2014

From the horse's mouth

The team will update us with news and observations of life in Namibia during the Championships - when Wifi allows anyway!  Here is their opening day update:

"Yesterday we finished our final training session on the glass court before our first individual matches early today. We have been extremely excited with the build up of the event, also patient with the other sides of things such as slow wi-fi connections, late shuttle rides and early 2am wake ups. The food in Namibia has also been very different in taste, size and also colour lol. But Other than that, the food has been wicked!

Day one of the tournament sees a tough start for three of our kiwi players losing to more experienced Spanish and South African players. Scott Galloway advances to the top 64 after a walk over from a Nigerian no show. Day two to come with more tough matches ahead."
