NZ wins crucial pool match over Sweden

The Junior Squash Blacks have delivered a crucial win overnight in pool play over Sweden at the World Junior Championships in Windhoek, Namibia.  The result means New Zealand finishes third in Pool F, and will take a favourable seeding into the playoffs for 13-24.

The second and final day of pool play began with a tough opening assignment against Spain.  Seeded sixth, the Spaniards are the top ranked team in Pool F.  Scott Galloway got New Zealand off to an excellent start against Spanish number one Edmon Lopez-Moller, pushing him to five sets and nearly pulling off an impressive upset.

The Spaniards flexed their muscle in the next two matches to make certain of the tie, with Iker Pajares accounting for Luke Jones, and Chapman Kutia going down to Bernat Jaume in a replay of his first round match of the Individual Championships.New Squash NZ Logo horizontal small

The afternoon brought about an all-important clash with Sweden to decide who would qualify third in Pool F.  Luke Jones got the tie off to a gruelling start, filling in at number one for Scott Galloway.  Jones pushed Swedish number one Pontus Rengbo hard in losing 3-1, setting the scene for Max Trimble and Chapman Kutia to bring home the bacon for the Kiwis.  This they duly achieved, with Kutia beating Alexander Lundqvist for the second time in Namibia, and Trimble reversing his loss to Tor Chistofferson Individual Championships by the closest of 3-0 margins (16-14 11-9 11-9).
