Seeds on song at Nationals

The seeded players remain largely untroubled after the first complete day of the 2014 National Championships.

Alana Sincock pulled off the only upset of the second round, the ninth seed from Waikato beating eighth seed Abbie Palmer in five sets.

The match of the second round was undoubtedly Rebecca Barnett vs Lisa Cowlard.  Barnett, the tournament fifth seed, was the heavy favourite going into the match.  After taking the first two sets 11-2 11-6, there was little to suggest an upset could be on the cards.  However Cowlard, using her extensive local knowledge of the North Shore courts, bounced back to take the next two sets 11-9 13-11.  The fifth was a nailbiter, and once again decided by the slimmest of margins - Barnett winning 16-14.

The recently returned Commonwealth Games squad were largely convincing in victory, with Kylie Lindsay in particular in regal form needing just 12 minutes to dispatch Eliza Sim in straight sets.  Lance Beddoes had a scare from ex-New Zealand junior teammate Cameron Jamieson, needing the full complement of five sets to see off his challenge. 

Play begins on Thursday at 9.45am, and entry for spectators is free.

The quarter-finals will be live streamed free of charge, starting from 11.15am.
