Beddoes, Barnett seeded to win Under 23s

Lance Beddoes and Rebecca Barnett have top billing at this weekend's Under 23 National Championships to be hosted by Cambridge Racquets Club.

Entries for the first edition of the event in more than 20 years have been strong, resulting in the nearby Leamington Squash Club's courts being required.  Many junior players are using the event as preparation for the upcoming National Junior Age Group Championships, whilst many players who are no longer juniors are clearly revelling in the opportunity to play in a National Championship tailored to them.NZOC Lance

The strength in the draws is evident: top seed Rebecca Barnett joined in the Women's Open by second seed Emma Millar, with Ellie Epke and Abbie Palmer rounding out the top four seeds.  The strong sixteen draw is rounded out by many recent (and some current) top junior players, with most results too tight to call.

In the Men's Open Lance Beddoes' experience and class (he is ranked 137 in the world) are expected to serve him well in his bid for the title.  Fast improving Cantab Chris van der Salm is the second seed, with another Millar - Emma's younger brother Zac - rounding out the top three.  Three members of the recently returned New Zealand Junior Men's team will add further interest to the draw; Scott Galloway, Luke Jones and Max Trimble will be out to prove they can foot it with the seniors too.

In addition to the Individual Championships, the inaugural Tertiary Teams Challenge will add interest to proceedings.  Mixed and Men's divisions will be contested by teams of four players from three different Universities (Auckland, Waikato and Victoria).  Waikato's powerful lineup of the Millar siblings, Jacinta Matson and Jim Williamson are the favourites in the Mixed category, while the Men's is looking too close to call at this stage.

Play gets underway from 5.25pm on the Friday evening, and entry for spectators is free.
