Cantab Williams causes upsets at Juniors

There have been major upsets in the quarter-finals of the boys' under 19 division today at Junior Nationals.  The top two seeds have been knocked out in the quarter-finals in two stunning results.  Cantab Joseph Williams has beaten Scott Galloway, while Luke Cooper ousted second seed Max Trimble to wreak havoc with the seedings.

Seeded ninth, Williams played well to beat eighth seed Ben Thornton (Waikato) in straight games in the second round.  It provided little indication of what was to come, as he stunned top seed Scott Galloway (Wellington) in the quarter-finals 16-14 9-11 11-9 11-9.  Cooper, of the Mt Maunganui Sports Club, had needed five sets to overcome Te Kuiti's Montell Whatarangi in his second round that morning.  He showed amazing powers of recovery to last five sets again in the evening to overcome Max Trimble (Whangarei)  The other under 19 quarter-finals went to plan, with Chapman Kutia beating Josh Oakley and Luke Jones beating Joseph Lyons.2012 Hayley Hughes

The girls' under 19 is also going to seeding thus far, after two rounds.  The quarter- and semi-finals will be played tomorrow.

Saturday will see semi-finals played in all divisions.  Entry for spectators is free.
