Big result for Beddoes at Worlds
14 Nov 2014Auckland's Lance Beddoes has pulled off a big win to qualify for the main draw of the World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Up against German Jens Schoor - ranked 72 in the world to Beddoes' 141 - Beddoes played an excellent match to not only upset the form books, but do it in straight games (11-7 11-4 12-10 in 34 minutes). With masterful understatement, Beddoes opined: "good match today, I played well I think".
Beddoes was in many ways lucky to even take the court. Up until the day before the event he was still listed as a reserve. Several injuries saw him rise up the list, and thanks to being 'Johnny on the Spot' (he was in Doha already, where he has been training for the last six weeks), Beddoes was able to gleefully accepting a spot in the qualifying draw the day before the event was to start.
He will now take on Indian Mahesh Mangaonkar, ranked 49 in the world, in the main draw.
Campbell Grayson, the other New Zealander involved in the event, has drawn Frenchman Lucas Serme (46 in the world) in the first round.
Both Kiwis will be in action on Tuesday (NZT).
