AGM formalites over for another year

The various formalities, meetings and awards of this year's AGM weekend have been successfully concluded.

The weekend began with a forum on Friday, attended by representatives of the eleven Districts as well as the Squash New Zealand board and several life members, selectors and programme directors.  A productive and cooperative day was held.New Squash NZ Logo horizontal small

On the Friday evening Squash New Zealand's Annual Awards were held in conjunction with a New Zealand Squash Hall of Fame induction at Remuera Rackets Club.  The result was a night to remember: 100 attendees watched on as the sport's highest achievers of 2014 were honoured.  Master of Ceremonies Gary Denvir interviewed each of the winners to find out more about their love of the game, and achievements over the last 12 months.  Award winners were:

Club of the Year: Squash City Invercargill
New Coach of the Year: Sally Stantiall (Central)
Club/School Coach of the Year: Graeme Randolph (Bay of Plenty)
Performance Coach of the Year: Kashif Shuja (Central)
Volunteer of the Year: Josie Fenwicke (Wellington)
Chairman's Award: Dave Clarke (Bay of Plenty)
Personality of the Year: Joelle King (Waikato)

Midway through the Squash New Zealand awards, Hall of Fame management committee chairman Don Cotter introduced a new Master of Ceremonies in Joseph Romanos to lead us through the induction of Bryden Clarke to the New Zealand Squash Hall of Fame.  As a player, Bryden represented New Zealand, before becoming a national selector and heavily involved in the administration of the Central and Bay of Plenty Districts.  Clarke was absolutely pivotal to the funds being raised to send promising players such as Bruce Brownlee and Ross Norman on their first British tours.  As much as any of his considerable achievements and contributions to the sport, Clarke's larger than life personality endears him to any who meet him.  A truly deserving inductee to the Hall of Fame.

MC Romanos then took advantage of the presence of two former World Champions in the audience - Australia's Vicki Cardwell and our own Dame Susan Devoy.  A brief panel interview was held, with the former rivals having the crowd in stitches as the relived their glory days.

The Saturday morning Annual General Meeting confirmed Dayne Far's (Wellington) election to the board of Squash New Zealand, with Marlborough's Tony Alexander standing down after three dedicated years of service to the national body.  During the new board's first meeting Tony Johnston was re-elected as Chair.

The 2014 Annual Report was distributed - click here for an electronic version: http://www.squashnz.co.nz/content/docs/about_us/Squash%20NZ%20Annual%20Report%202014.pdf.

Overall a very positive weekend for squash in New Zealand.  It is important to recognise success within our sport, and to connect with each other as often as geographical restrictions allow.
