Squash Blacks beaten by Egypt at World Champs

The women's Squash Blacks have been defeated by Egypt in the first round of pool play at the World Women's Championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada.

Top seeded Egypt were too strong for New Zealand, as expected, romping to a straightforward 3/0 win on the glass showcourt.

New Zealand fielded its strongest lineup, with Amanda Landers-Murphy, Megan Craig and Kylie Lindsay all gaining invaluable court-time on the glass court against some of the best players in the world - sure to hold them in good stead for the later rounds of the Championships.

Playing at number two, Megan Craig got things underway for the Kiwis against WR#4 Nour El Sherbini.  Craig's athleticism wasn't enough to make an impact on the unresponsive glass court that is so conducive to shot-making; Sherbini winning 11-6 11-1 11-6 in 18 minutes.

Amanda Landers-Murphy was on next.  She was defeated by WR#3 Raneem El Weleilly, who used a devastating array of volley boasts, lobs and counter-drops to deadly effect on the cold glass court to record an 11-4 11-4 11-2 victory.

Kylie Lindsay put in a very strong showing at number three against WR#8 Nour El Tayeb.  Lindsay's racketskills came to the fore, as she put ruthlessly put away any loose balls from El Tayeb.  Lindsay was close to El Tayeb in all three games, putting in a creditable showing in a 7-11 6-11 8-11 loss.

The Squash Blacks next take on China at 5am on Wednesday morning NZ time.  The full draw for Pool A can be found here.  After China, NZ play twice on Thursday, against Ireland at 5am and Colombia at midday (both NZT).  Both of Thursday's matches will be streamed live - click here for the full streaming schedule.
