Changes to Olympic sport selection process
19 Jan 2015Recent changes to the way sports are selected for Olympic inclusion are good news for squash.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) adopted a series of recommendations late in 2014, including the removal of the limit on sports present at the Olympics. Rather than operating a cap of 28 sports (as has been the case in the past), going forward the limits will be placed on athlete numbers (10,500) and events (310).
This provides the flexibility to remove some existing events/disciplines, and add in new sports, such as squash!
Equally important is the agreement that sports do not need to be fixed seven years in advance of the Games and that the IOC Executive Board can make recommendations. Taken together, this is another real step forward for Squash as it paves the way for change.
Meanwhile, Inside the Games (an important Olympic website) is conducting a poll on which sports should be added. Here is the link to it:
So that support for squash is as strong as possible we would be grateful if you could circulate this link to your friends and family, and encourage them to add their vote for squash.
