Day 2 at NZ Junior OpenNew Squash NZ Logo horizontal small

The Girls Open quarter finals followed the script pretty closely with the only upset being when 5th seed Kaitlyn Watts managed to edge out 4th seed Juee Bhide. 1st seed Ellie went comfortable through taking out 8th seed Anna Hughes. 3rd seed Abbie Palmer took out 6th seed Nadia Hubbard in a comfortable 3. 2nd seed Lakeesha Rarere had a comfortable win against Emily Flett winning in 3.

The Semis in the Girls Open saw Kaitlyn not being able to overcome the experience of Ellie Epke with Ellie’s power and control allowing her to gain the upper hand and control the match. The relentless pressure taking its toll on Kaitlyn forcing errors that kept Ellie in control of the game throughout with Ellie taking a comfortable win in 3. Abbie Palmer got to have a rematch of her Under 19 Australian Junior Open final taking on Lakeesha Rarere. Right from the outset Lakeesha kept up a relentless pace that had Abbie under pressure and on the back foot. In the second set Abbie started to find her rhythm and began to turn the tide taking out the second set. The third set was again a tight tussle with Lakeesha beginning to assert some ascendancy with more of the same followed in the fourth with Abbie forced to retrieve more and more under a barrage of shots from the Aussie eventually going down and the result remaining the same with Abbie losing out in 4. It will be a Trans Tasman battle tomorrow as Ellie and Lakeesha try to take the honours home for their country.

The Boys Open saw 1st seed Luke comfortably take out 8th seed Matthew Lucente. Luke was overall just too strong with the better control and he kept building the pressure forcing Mathew into errors. 2nd seed Scott Galloway was at his best playing with accuracy and flair with a great array of attacking shots being too sharp for 7th seed Montell. 4th seed Josh Oakley and Australian Jon Van Der Kreek had a torrid battle with plenty of action with Josh running out the winner. The match of the quarters could go to Finn Trimble and 6th seed Alex Revington. Finn had a 2 game lead but Alex pulled back to level the scores at 2 all. The 5th was a huge battle with the scores neck and neck for most of the game but eventually Finn pulled away to win 11/8 in the 5th.

Unfortunately Finn was not able to cause another upset in the semis losing out to the experience of Scott Galloway in 3. Josh Oakley looked ready to upset Luke Jones clinching a crucial first game win with gut busting rallies and every point being fiercely contested. The second set started in a similar manner until Luke started to exert some dominance creating pressure with some subtle deception forcing Josh to cover a lot more ground. The third and fourth sets saw Luke gaining the ascendancy dominating the rallies and controlling the match eventually taking the match in 4.

Old team mates from the 2014 World Junior Boys Luke and Scott will get to battle it out for the ultimate glory tomorrow.

Games start at 9am tomorrow at the Timaru Squash Club. The Girls Open final is at 1:40pm and the Boys Open final is
