All seeds are on track after the first day of the Cousins Shield/Mitchell Cup with some big names gracing the Whangarei Squash Club.

In the Cousins Shield competition eighth seeds Cromwell managed to get the win 4-1 over ninth seeds Hamilton 1. Sixth seeds Devoy Squash and Fitness made light work of Hamilton 2, not letting this Waikato team take a match or a game. Fifth seeds Remuera made sure that twelth seeds Royal Oak werent't going to upset the draws and took the win 5-0. The matches of round 1 went to fourth seeds Herne Bay and thirteenth seed locals Mangakahia. Herne Bay managed to clinch the win in the fourth game but Mangakahia showed not to underestimate them winning the fifth game and showing the little guys have some fight in them. Fifth seeds Henderson looked like they were in threat of losing the tie when Kashif Shuja and Lance Beddoes had a massive fifth setter with Shuja wanting to claim the win over his younger opponent. Shuja unfortunately couldn't convert in the fifth and Henderson took the tie in the fourth. Belmont Park and their team of juniors showed they were here to get serious and went down a respectable 3-2.

In the Mitchell Cup competition second seeds and 2014 winners North Shore were not going to let seventh seeds and local team Whangarei get any ideas of winning, with all the shore players looking comfortable on court. Third seeds Royal Oak and sixth seeds Silverdale both had their star studded number ones in play. One of the games of Round 1 was between Shelley Kitchen (Silverdale) and Amanda Landers-Murphy (Royal Oak). Landers-Murphy was 2-1 up but Kitchen showed her experience on court and managed to fight back to take it to 5, even going long in the fifth, but she couldn't convert. Silverdale was not able to chalk a win up in this round. Fourth seeds Devoy faced first seeds Remuera and with a strong Remuera team there was always going to be a tough battle to be had. Kylie Lindsay was pushed to the limits in her match against Ellie Epke. Epke was feeling confident after having been named in the World Junior Girls team earlier in the week and managed to scrape in a win in the fifth. Devoy eventually going down 4-1 to Remuera.

Round 2 of the Cousins Shield started later in the night on Friday and eighth seeds Cromwell couldn't take out first seeds and 2014 winner Squashways going down 5-0. Twelth and thirteenth seeds Royal Oak and Mangakahia battled it out on court but Mangakahia managed to chalk the win up with all of Royal Oaks hopes for some silverware now lieing in their Mitchell Cup team. The last match of Friday night was between fourth and fifth seeds Herne Bay and Remuera. With match scores 1-1 when the number one seeds walked on court it was never going to be an easy win for either of them. Michael Sunderland and Chris Lloyd had arguably one of the best games of the weekend to date. Sunderland managed to pull the win through for Remuera but it wasn't enough for the Remuera team gioing down 3-2.
