Day 1 Masters NationalsHBSRC

Most games went to the higher seeded players today at the Masters Nationals however some lower seeds have shown some great work and have taken some unexpected wins.

The Men's 35+ draw saw 2 rounds being played and the top 4 seeds have moved through to the semi-finals. In the Men's 40+ draw 11th Seed Mark Foxcroft and 10th seed Steven O'Toole took out their higher seeds Wayne Reid and John Cheesman respectively to move through to the quarters. In the quarters top seed Scott Gardiner moved on to the semi-finals whilst 5th seeds Evans Chileshe had a tough battle to beat 4th seed Shan Johnston in 5. 2nd seed Craig Brann has moved on comfortably to the semis, with one quarter final game left to be played.

The Men's 45+ draw has seen no surprises with all of the top seeds moving through to the semis comfortably with still one game to be played in the quarters. The 50+ Men's saw the only upset coming from the 9th seed Rob Brownrigg defeating 8th seed Mike Barnes. Quarter finals for most of this draw will be played today with only 4th seed Richard van Rynbach having secured his place in the semi to date.

The Men's 55+ draw has seen all 4 top seeds move through to the semi's and it will be a trans-tasman clash on both sides of the draw. 3rd seed Mark Waldin will have to defeat 2nd seed Bryan Beeson whilst 4th seed Marty McKelvie has to get past top seed Kelvin Smith to make it to the finals. In the 60+ 5th seed Gary Cowan has taken out 4th seed Wayne Seebeck to earn a right in the semi-final. He will have to come up against top seed Graeme Randolph whilst 2nd seed Lawrence Skurr has comfortably made his way to the semi's with his opponent to be determined.

No surprises have come in the Men's 65+ draw with all 4 top seeds getting through to the semis. The round robin of the Men's 70+ saw top seed Barry Gardiner beat Murray Gaydon whilst 2nd seed Trevor Coulter had a loss to Colin Hayvice.

Excitement has also carried through the social draw with top seeds playing to their current seeding.

In the Women's 35+ no surprises have come yet with all top seeds making their way to the semis.  The same was true for the 40+ division. In the 45+ division only 1 round has been played with quarters starting this morning, the only excitement came when 10th seed Di Tasker took out the 7th seed Carole Berry in 4.

In the Women's 50+ 5th seed Karen Mitchell took out 4th seed Rhonda Christiansen whilst all other seeds progressed through to the semis. The Women's 55+ was a very similar score card to the other draws with all 4 top seeds progressing through to the semis.

In the Women's 60+ the Top seeds are through to the top pool to now play a round robin to determine the winner whilst the 65+ draw saw top seed Kaye Jackson take a win over Diana Bennett and 3rd seed Paula Smith beat 2nd seed Judy Cooper.

The Women's social draws are seeing great excitement for all involved.
