Canterbury Claim Masters Teams EventHBSRC

After some hard fought battles and 5 days of squash the Canterbury masters team have managed to claim the win over Southland in the final day of the Masters Teams.

Monday morning saw Northland playing Eastern. The Eastern team showed great strength across all their age groups however Northland showed that their secret weapons were in the newly introduced men's 60+ with Hongi Laing and their men's 35+ with Evans Chileshe with these 2 players securing 2 wins for Northland and the final score being 9-2 to Eastern.

Wellington and Central had a very tough battle out on court and it could have been anyone's game. Wellington showed strength throughout their women's side losing only 1 match to central, however Central showed their strength in the men, however Central couldn't clinch enough games and eventually went down 6/5 to Wellington.

In the Waikato vs Auckland match up Auckland showed great strength across all their age groups with their single loss coming from the men's 60+.

Monday afternoon saw defending champions Canterbury come out firing and showing they weren't here to mess around. Even though Eastern had taken a win earlier that day it wasn't enough with Canterbury taking a clean sweep in games 11-0.

Southland and Bay of Plenty had a tough battle in the championship draw. This was a case of both teams going back and forth and at points seeming to take the slight edge, but eventually Southland managed to clinch the tie 6-5.

In the plate round robin Waikato and Central were both out to avenge their losses earlier in the day. Games seemed to go back and forth with each game proving crucial for the teams. However Waikato was able to take a win and get up on the score board.

The semi-finals rolled around very quickly for the teams and the first match up was between Canterbury and Wellington. Canterbury having shown their strength earlier that day were out to repeat this. They started off well and a few wins from Wellington proved not to be enough for them with Canterbury taking the win 7-4.

The other semi-final was between Southland and Auckland. Auckland on paper seemed to have the upper hand, however some tough games throughout the week saw the Auckland team feeling a bit worse for wear and with the unexpected default from an injured Mark Waldin gave Southland the edge to take the win. The Southland team also showed that grades meant nothing for them with some lower players taking out spectacular wins and the final score being 6-5.

In the plate draw Northland and the Bay had some tough games throughout but the matches eventually fell the Bays way with a win 9-2. Northland however showed that their Men's 35+ and 60+ were where their strength was.

Eastern and Waikato were first up in the plate draw. Waikato showed some great strength in their younger men and their 35+ man Steve O'Toole eventually took the win for Waikato. Many could be forgiven for thinking O'Toole should be in a higher age group but he showed he was able to match it with his younger counterparts.

Central was on a high after having won the quiz night on Monday so they wanted to continue this on against Northland. Northland however showed that their team was ready for a well deserved win. With some big battles on court and some great work from both teams the tie eventually fell the way of Central 7-4.

The last round of the plate draw saw Eastern play Bay of Plenty. The Bay wanted to scratch up a win and they took the win from the local Eastern team 9-2.

The classic plate saw Auckland and Wellington battle it out for 3rd place. With players starting to see the effects of 5 days of squash there were a couple of defaults in games, however this didn't deter either team and eventually Auckland took the win 7-4.

The final saw Canterbury looking to defend their title for the second year against unexpected finalists Southland. Southland showed some moments of brilliance winning some tough ties however the experienced Christchurch team made sure to secure the win and take the title home 7-3.
