Champion of Champions DrawsResized Champion of Champions

Squash players from around the country will represent their district at the National Champion of Champions event to be held at SquashGym Palmerston North this weekend.

The Champion of Champions is a national event that sees individuals play off for the title of District Champion for each grade (A-F, Men and Women), and then fight for the title of Champion of Champions in their grade at the national event. The tournament ran for the first time in 2012.

Tournament Director Joss Urbahn says 78 players from nine districts will come to Palmerston North for the event.

“We have players registered from F grade right through to A grade, and from as far north as Northland and as far south as South Canterbury. The format is similar to that of the Super Champs but it’s played on an individual basis; 11 District Champions in each grade will fight it out for the national titles.

“In the A Grade Men’s division Palmerston North’s own Kashif Shuja is ranked first. His main threat for the title is likely to come from Cameron Jamieson from Hawkes Bay. Top seed in the Women’s A Grade is another Palmerston North player, Danielle Fourie. Second seed is Holly Donnelly from the Bay of Plenty.”

In addition to the A grade division top seeds there are another 10 SquashGym players competing in other divisions.

In total the tournament comprises 30 juniors and 48 seniors.

SquashGym Club President Ed Burston says the SquashGym team is looking forward to hosting players and supporters. “We are keen to enhance our reputation as great hosts and for delivering top quality Squash events.”

Games commence at 5.30pm on Friday, with the main finals being held on Saturday afternoon. Full tournament draws are available on www.squashgym.co.nz

Grading for the tournament was taken from the first of September this year. Central District Champion of Champions was held in Hawera.

The 2014 Champion of Champions National Finals were hosted by Tawa Squash Club. The national titles were shared relatively evenly among Districts, with Bay of Plenty particularly excelling by picking up four of the titles. In the A Grade division Cameron Jamieson (Eastern) won the Men’s title, and Nadine Cull (Waikato) won the Women’s.
