Top Seeds Survive Opening Team Tests In PolandWSF Logo Small

The top-seeded teams brushed aside their early opposition on the opening day of action in the VDC Dental-Care WSF Men's World Junior Team Squash Championship in the Polish city of Bielsko-Biala.

Favourites Egypt, the defending champions looking to win the World Squash Federation title for a record fourth successive time, defeated Switzerland 3/0 and will now face event debutants Jordan in their remaining tie in Pool A.

Pakistan and France have already guaranteed their places in the knockout stages after two wins. In Pool B, second seeds Pakistan despatched both Germany and Hong Kong China 3/0, while third seeds France beat Guatemala 3/0 and Australia 2/1 in Pool C.

Hosts Poland, also competing in the championship for the first time, went down 3/0 to New Zealand in a morning clash in Pool D, then in the evening faced Argentina on the all-glass showcourt sited alongside the historic Bielsko Castle in the heart of the city (pictured above).

At 2/0 down in matches, Polish number one Maksymilian Wielgus raised the partisan crowd's hopes of consolation win when he took a 2/1 lead against his Argentinean opponent Juan Barreyro.

But the 16-year-old from Zakopane was unable to hold onto his lead as Barreyro burst back to take the match 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3 and give his country a 3/0 victory.
