Massey University have claimed the Tertiary Teams Title after some strong performances from their team against the Auckland University, Victoria University and Waikato University teams.

The Massey University team of Sion Wiggin, Ben Calvert, Brandon Keenan, Allan Bailey and Taylor Leabourn proved too strong for their Auckland and Victoria counterparts not dropping a match. They were set to face the Waikato University team in the final round of Pool Play to decide the champion and with the Waikato team of Max Trimble, Alex Oakley, Fergus McKinnon, William Hirst and Stuart Martin having taken wins over Victoria 3-1 and Auckland 4-0.

The final round of Pool play saw matches kick off with William Hirst having a tough battle against Brandon Keenan. Keenan couldn’t quite settle in the first game but he came out firing putting Hirst under pressure and Keenan took the early lead for Massey claiming his match 3-1. Max Trimble stepped up to face Sion Wiggin and with both players having battled it out a number of times before it was set to be a tough match. Trimble and Wiggin went game for game with it swinging back and forth, but it was not meant to be for Trimble as he went down to Wiggin 2-3 and Wiggin taking the second match for Massey. Fergus Mckinnon would be required to work hard to beat Allan Bailey and keep Waikato in the hunt for the title. With Bailey claiming 11 successive points in the first game it seemed Waikato might have been out of the hunt but some great fighting from McKinnon kept Waikato in it and even with some tense moments McKinnon claimed Waikato’s first win in an exciting 5 setter. Alex Oakley and Ben Calvert were both out to try and seal the match for their University. It was going to be tough work for Oakley with him needing to win in 3 to outright seal the victory and a win in 4 would sent it to points count back. Calvert didn’t let this get to him and he showed he was out to claim the win for Massey and some great rallies from both players kept everyone intrigued but the match went Calvert’s way 3-1 and he sealed the win for Massey with Waikato placing second.

In the recreational division Victoria University claimed the title whilst Auckland 2 came runner up in their division with some great squash played by all.

Congratulations to all teams involved and thank you to the North Shore Squash Club for another well run event. Full results can be found on our Facebook page here
