Recognition of Prior Learning Coaching

Squash New Zealand’s drive for ‘International Success’ takes another step forward with the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process formalised.

Squash New Zealand recognises that coaches gain skills and knowledge through a range of experiences and regardless of how coaches learn, this all contributes to their current competency. The RPL process has been put in place to ensure coaches who have invested in their development and who wish to work with high performance athletes have the opportunity to be qualified under the Coach Development Framework.

Coaching and Development Director Luke Morriss says “coaches require the skills and experience relevant to the level of players they are working with. To create better players, we must develop better coaches.”

A key pillar of the new High Performance Strategy is to expand the pool of coaches able to appropriately develop our best players.

“A number of our coaches working in the high performance space have either come through the pre-existing accreditation framework, come from overseas, were a high performance player or have not attended any coaching modules. The RPL process applies to these coaches” said Morriss.

RPL assesses an individual’s development to determine whether or not that individual has achieved the required learning outcomes. A key factor in this process is the provision of evidence by the individual.
