Malaysia Defeat New Zealand at Women's Team Championships

It was another tough day at the office for the New Zealand Women's team when they took on Malaysia in the 5-8 Playoff at the World Women's Team Championships in Paris, France.

First up was WR#10 Joelle King taking on WR#6 Nicol David. David has not lost a match at the Women's Team Championships since 2004 and she was not looking to let today be the first one. David has dropped to a WR#6, her lowest since 2004. Whilst King looked ready to try and topple the Malaysian and get New Zealand off to a good start King could not match David today who claimed the win in 3 (11-3, 11-3, 11-5) and took an early lead for Malaysia.

Next on court was WR#55 Amanda Landers-Murphy who would take on 17year old Sivasangari Subramaniam WR#51. The Malaysian went out to a 2-0 lead but Landers-Murphy was not going to let this deter her as she fought hard to claim the third game. Landers-Murphy threw everything on the line but it was not meant to be today as the young Malaysian claimed the win in 4 (11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6).

New Zealand will now take on sixth seeds Australia in the 7/8 Playoff where they will be looking to better their seeding of eight. The Trans-Tasman rivalry is sure to be a good one with the Australians having had a loss to the seventh seeds USA in the 5-8 playoff today. Australia boasts an astonishing 9 Women's World Team titles from 19 events and the most won by any 1 country. Their last title was won in New Zealand back in 2010 where they defeated England in the final.

The Australian team features Donna Urquhart, Rachael Grinham, Christine Nunn and Tamika Saxby and is being coached by former world Number 1 Michelle Martin.

They will play at the St Cloud Squash Club at 2pm Local Time. Check out the World Women's Team Championship page here to see where you can watch the games and follow all the results.
