World Masters Games Sees over 430 Participants Compete in Squash World Masters Games

With just over 1 week until the World Masters Games kicks off in Auckland, 432 squash players from 19 different countries are finalising their preparation for one of the biggest sporting events in the world to hit New Zealand’s shores. The North Shore Squash club will be the home of the squash and with their recent renovations the place is set to welcome everyone to the stunning scenery of Lake Pupuke.

The event has drawn some big names to come and compete including a number of past Masters World Champions and one Women’s World Champion. Sarah Fitz-Gerald will be competing in the Women’s 45+ draw and this 5x World Open Champion (1996, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2002) will be looking to add this Masters title to her mantelpiece after claiming it at the World Masters Championships in 2016.

The youngest age groups, the Men’s and Women’s 35+ see two of New Zealand’s own ex-professional players taking the top spots. In the Women’s 35+ Open Shelley Kitchen, Ex. World Number 6 and winner of 2 Commonwealth Games medal looks set to add this title to her collection. In the Men’s Division Kashif Shuja who reached a World High Ranking of 36 and secured five New Zealand Senior Nationals Titles will be seeking to add this to his portfolio of achievements.

There are a number of other prominent names spread throughout the draws including 6x World Masters Champion from South Africa Craig van der Wath who will be competing in the Men’s 50+; Gary Duberly of the North Shore in Auckland and the 2x World Masters Champion in 2008 and 2010 who will also be in the Men’s 50+ category; Trevor Coulter of Hamilton in New Zealand is one of the oldest competitors in the competition competing in the Men’s 80+ and a 2014 World Masters Champion; and finally Susan Hillier of Australia will compete in the Women’s 50+ category looking to add to her 2016 World Masters Champion title.
