ILT Community Trust NZ Southern Invercargill Open Main Draw Determined

Joe Green, Daniel Mekbib, Sean Conroy, and Chris van der Salm are through to the main draw of the 2017 ILT/CTOS NZ Southern Open PSA.

Green took a 3-0 win over New Zealand’s Luke Jones in a tightly contested, very patiently played match. Green took an early lead in the first, with Jones attempting to get back into the game with well-placed length but Green was too accurate and took the set 11-7. The second set saw Jones come out with a much more attacking game, moving Green around the court a lot more, however again Green remained patient, forcing the errors and taking the second 11-9. Green was much more dominant in the third set, taking a quick lead and converting it to the win 11-5.

Daniel Mekbib looked strong in his first set against Bradley Masters, placing the ball with great accuracy, taking the set 11-5. Masters came back hard in the second, applying increasing pressure, forcing errors from Mekbib, moving to a strong lead. Mekbib fought back but Masters was able to take the set 11-8. Mekbib returned much more focused in the third, completely dominating and taking the set quickly 11-2. The fourth set saw Mekbib continue to dominate, taking the set 11-5 for a 3-1 win.

Scott Galloway looked strong against Sean Conroy early on, reaching gameball in the first before Conroy pulled it back in and took the set 13-11. In the second set Conroy seemed to know what Galloway was going to do before he did himself, showing superb reading of the play to be waiting for Galloways returns, taking the set 11-3. Galloway dug deep in the third but it was Conroy who was able to maintain control and close out the match 11-8.

After a slow start, Chris van der Salm took control and came back from a 0-5 deficit to take the first set 11-6 against Matias Tuomi. From there van der Salm remained in charge of the match, using his height and long reach to his advantage to keep moving Tuomi around the court, forcing errors to take the win and move through to the main draw.
