9th Seeds Make Top 8 at New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships

The first day of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships has wound up with both the top 8 seeds in the Men’s and Women’s going down to the ninth seeds in Round 2.

In the Women’s draw Palmerston North Girls High A had a bye in their match whilst Te Puke High School, Napier Girls High School and James Hargest College all took their wins 5-0. Marlborough Girls College and Whangarei Girls High School took their wins 4-1. Sixth seeds Waikato Diocesan School for Girls took their win 3-2 in a close fought battle with Westlake Girls High school but it was the ninth seeds Havelock North High School that managed to upset the eighth seeds Tauranga Girls College taking their win 3-2 and securing their position in the top 8 where they will play the defending champions Palmerston North Girls High School A.

In the Men’s Draw the top five seeds Westlake Boys High School, St Paul’s Collegiate A, Palmerston North Boys High School A, Auckland Grammar A and Tauranga Boys College progressed to the quarter finals with wins 5-0 over their opponents. Hamilton Boys High School and Havelock North took their wins 4-1 but it was the ninth seeds Hutt International Boys School that managed to take out the eighth seeded Whangarei Boys High School 3-2 to clinch their place in the top 8 where they will be taking on the defending champions Westlake Boys High School for a spot in the semi finals.
