Auckland Open gets underway

The season’s first major tournament, the Auckland Open PSA Closed Satellite, got underway on Friday evening at the Remuera Rackets Club with Open draws featuring many of the countries top locally-based players including NZ Commonwealth Games team members Evan Williams and Zac Millar.

The Men’s draw produced up one early round upset, with third seed Kashif Shuja going down to Lwamba Chileshe in four games. Top seed Evan Williams eased through relatively untroubled against Temwa Chileshe to set up a quarterfinal matchup against Chris Lloyd, whose epic five set win against Todd Redman drew the largest crowd of the night. Fourth seed Zac Millar had a three set win over local Andre Wagenaar, while second seed Ben Grindrod recovered from losing the first game to win in four over Sion Wiggin in a rematch of last year’s final – a nod to the strength of this weekend’s draw.

The Women’s draw was mostly a straightforward affair in the first round. Top seed Kaitlyn Watts was pushed in a tough four games by Tracey Kimble, while second seed Rebecca Barnett moved into the quarterfinals with a three game win over the youngest player in the Open draw, Natalie Sayes. The match of the round was between defending champion Casey Owen and Remuera’s Priscilla Wildsmith, with Wildsmith recovering from being two games to one down to win in five.

The quarterfinals begin at 11am Saturday with the semi-finals to be played later in the day from 5pm. The Women’s final will be played at 3.15pm Sunday, followed on by the Men’s final. Entry is free for spectators all weekend.
