Coll Ruins Australia Day Celebrations

Paul Coll has won his first PSA tour title by winning the US$5k Australia Day Challenge in Brisbane.

Coll has started the 2013 season in style by taking out the Australia Day Challenge in Brisbane.  Going into the event as top seed, Coll was always going to feature at the business-end of the tournament; however there were plenty of Australians in the draw with other ideas about a foreigner winning on Australia Day.

As it turned out, Coll was largely unchallenged in his march to a maiden PSA title.  The twenty year old dropped a game in the quarter-finals, to James Huang of Tapei, before easing past compatriot and clubmate Lance Beddoes 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 in the semi-final.  The final saw him up against Australian Justin Beard, ranked four places below Coll at 120 in the world.  A comfortable 11-5, 11-8, 11-5 win ensued.

The win should see Coll's ranking of 116 jump up considerably in the February rankings, and will be just the reward Coll was looking for after a great deal of hard work in 2012, and a strong pre-season in Greymouth.
