Auckland and Waikato Win the NZ Junior Teams Event

The final placings in the NZ junior inter-district teams event at the North Shore Squash Club have been confirmed for 2018 with the strong Auckland and Waikato teams winning the boy’s and girl’s competitions.

The men’s final had Auckland up against Bay of Plenty, and it was the big city team coming away winners 3-1 overall . Gabe Yam defeated Glenn Templeton in straight games in the top singles, Elijah Thomas accounted for Manaia Murphy Fell in three games, Leo Fatialofa beat Jack Niles also in three games while Joe Smythe won BOP's solitary point with a four game win over Tarin Love at number four. Manu Yam and Mark Waldin coached the winning team.

In the women’s comp Waikato were 3-1 winners over Eastern. Anika Jackson beat Winona Jo Joyce in four in the top singles, Georgia Robcke lost to Rhiarne Taiapa at number two, Leah Hodges beat Jena Gregory in four and Sophie Hodges beat Jess Dean in straight games in the number four singles. Phil Buscke and Rodica Barton-Wellington led the Waikato team.

The Auckland Junior Team took out the Gifford Cup for top overall district.

Boys placings; Auckland 1, BOP 2, Wellington 3, Waikato 4, Canterbury 5, Northland 6, Eastern 7, Central 8.

Girls placings; Waikato 1, Eastern 2, Auckland 3, BOP 4, Wellington 5, Southern 6, Northland 7, Central 8.
