Paul Coll Reaches Quarter-Final of DPD Open

In a marathon contest New Zealand world No.5 Paul Coll has come agonisingly close to beating Egyptian former world No.1 Karim Abdel Gawad in the quarter-finals at the PSA DPD Open in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in the weekend.

Gawad and Coll had met just three times on the PSA World Tour in the past, with the Kiwi claiming the last two victories. However, the Egyptian made sure to change that run of form as he came from one game down to take out Dutch resident Coll.

The Kiwi found himself 6-3 down in the opening moments, but soon regrouped to get back into the swing of things as he dug in to take the first game 11-7.

The next two games went in the favour of the Egyptian and he looked as though he was going to close out relatively comfortably in the fourth game, before Coll once again showcased his mental strength to save numerous match balls with some controversial decisions along the way.

Gawad was able to maintain his composure and closed out the match at the seventh attempt 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 14-12 in an incredible 75 minute match.

Coll will now train before playing at the El Gouna Platinum tournament in Egypt in just under a week.
