Day one doubles results

Several wins for Kiwi pairings on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games doubles in Glasgow.

Top women's doubles pairing Joelle King and Amanda Landers-Murphy were untroubled in beating Papua New Guinean combination Dorothy Boyce and Sheila Morove.  Their big challenge should come overnight when they face English third seeds Alison Waters/Emma Beddoes.  Megan Craig and Kylie Lindsay were cruelly denied the upset of the opening day against Malaysian fourth seeds Nicol David and Low Wee Wern.  Having won the opening set, the Kiwis were locked at sudden death (match/game ball) 10-10 in the second set, when a Malaysian drive hit the back wall nick to send the match into a decider.  The Malaysian duo took this out, meaning Craig and Lindsay face the difficult task of beating top Indian pair Dipika Pallikal/Joshana Chipanna to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The number one New Zealand men's doubles pair of Campbell Grayson and Martin Knight received a walkover in their first match of the day, then easily accounted for Bermuda pair Micah Franklin/Nicholas Kyme.  This guarantees them top placing in Pool E, and therefore a favourable seeding in the Round of 16.  Paul Coll and Lance Beddoes opened with a tough loss to Australian sixth seeds Ryan Cuskelly/Matt Karwalski before defeating a pair from the Norfolk Islands.  Coll and Beddoes now need to beat their Sri Lankan opponents tomorrow to secure second position in their pool and progress to the Round of 16.

Both Kiwi mixed doubles pairings were untroubled in their opening matches, King and Knight receiving a walkover victory, and Landers-Murphy and Coll cruising to victory over Papua New Guinean opponents.
