Day 1 Senior Nationals New Squash NZ Logo horizontal small

Day 1 of Senior Nationals at Christchurch Football Squash Club has gone relatively to plan with the Top 8 players in the Mens and Womens Open all proceeding on to their respective quarter finals.

Round 1 of the Womens Open went all to plan for most of the seeds, however Waikato locals Nadine Cull and Jacinta Matson decided they would make things interesting in their first match with Matson who was seeded 21st in the tournament taking out her fellow teammate in a hard fought 4 setter. Kaitlyn Watts also topppled her higher seeded opponent Hayley Hughes, Hughes seeded 14th took the first game comfortably but 19th seed Watts came back on and ran away with the match. All other seeds progressed on to Round 2.

Round 1 of the Mens Open was much more straightforward with all but one of the seeds progressing on to their round 2 games. This time it was Wellingtonian locals Sam Atkins and Richard Pittams who decided to battle it out on court. Both players went game for game until the fourth game where Pittams decided to close the match out.

Round 2 of the Womens Open looked clear cut until Jacinta Matson and Ellie Epke stepped on court. Matson was on a high after her win earlier in the day so she was looking to repeat this success, after a slow start in the first Matson battled it out to sneak in the second game in a battle of rallies and strong shots. This continued on in the third and fourth with both players claiming a game each, but it was Epke who was able to come out in the fifth and secure the win and her spot in the quarter finals. Round 2 of the Mens Open saw all the top 8 players proceed comfortably through with all players winning in 3.
