North Island Champs Round 1 Completed

The Men’s Draw saw all the top seeds proceed through to the quarter finals whilst the Women’s Draw saw Kaitlyn Watts and Abbie Palmer beat their higher seeded opponents in some exciting round 1 matches.

In the Men’s Open all the higher seeded players moved on comfortably to the Quarter-Finals. Whilst it looked like local favourite Cameron Jamieson wouldn’t be proceeding on when he played Canadian David Mill going down in the first game, Jamieson came back and managed to take the win in 4. Ben Grindrod took his win in Finn Trimble in 4 whilst Jamie Oakley had a default with Matthew Lucente unable to play due to plane cancellations. All other top seeds proceeded comfortably through with wins in 3.

In the Women’s Open Joelle King had a BYE first up whilst all other matches were completed in 3 but it was the closer games which proved to go in the lower seeds favour. Ninth seed Abbie Palmer looked too strong for eighth seed Joanna Shanks with Palmer playing some strong shots which Shanks was not able to pick up. Tenth seeds Kaitlyn Watts also upset her higher opponent Rebecca Barnett in three. Watts showed some great determination picking up shots and managing to flick the ball across court sending Barnett in the wrong direction and eventually Watts clinched the match in a great three setter.

Quarter-Final games begin at 9:00am on Saturday with quarter-final and semi-final games starting streaming at around 11am on Saturday. Games can be viewed here
