Walsh Wins Early Worlds Upset In PolandWSF Logo Small

England's unseeded Tom Walsh caused the first upset in an opening day of intense action in the VDC Dental-Care WSF World Junior Squash Championships by claiming an unexpected place in the men's third round of the World Squash Federation event being held in the Polish city of Bielsko-Biala for the first time.

It took exactly 100 matches at the nine-court Enjoy Squash club - two rounds in the men's event and one in the women's - to provide the last 32 rounds in both events.

Walsh, a 17-year-old from Brighton making his championship debut, eased past Argentina's Rodrigo Bonzo in the first round before recovering from a game down against Egyptian Ziad Sakr to take out the 9/16 seed 11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10 in the second round

The unheralded Englishman will now face fellow non-seed In Woo Lee for a place in the last 16. The 17-year-old from Bucheon despatched German Tobias Weggen in his second round clash to become the first Korean to reach the world championship's 3rd round.

Whilst Egypt will be represented by five players in the men's third round, Iran is celebrating an historic sole first appearance in the event's last 32 after Sajad Zareian, a 9/16 seed from Tehran, overcame New Zealander Scott Galloway 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-9.

All sixteen seeds safely survived their early encounters in the women's competition. One standout match saw Fereshteh Eghtedari fight back from 2/1 down to beat Australian Alexandra Haydon 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6 to become only the second Iranian girl to make the event's second round.

History was also made when Lynette Vai beat Swiss opponent Ambre Allinckx 11-3, 11-8, 12-10 to become the first player from Papua New Guinea to reach the event's 2nd round. The 18-year-old from Port Moresby will now line up against Japan's 9/16 seed Satomi Watanabe for a place in the last 16.
