Squash A Big Winner At 32nd Annual Māori Sports Awards

Squash has been a big winner at the 32nd Annual Māori Sports Awards at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia in the north Waikato.

World No 4, New Zealand Open champ and two-time 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Joelle King MNZM (Ngāti Porou) edged out a strong field of finalists including Dame Lisa Carrington, to be awarded the Senior Māori Women’s title.

The coach of the year was awarded to Glen Wilson (Waikato iwi) from the Howick squash club in Auckland and Commonwealth Games team while the sports team recipient winners (Ngā Ika a Whiro) went to King (Ngāti Porou) and Amanda Landers-Murphy (Taranaki, Te Atiawa, Ngāti Ruanui) who defended their doubles gold medal at Birmingham this year.
