Finals Sorted for Cousins Shield

Whilst the top seeds have proceeded into the finals of the Cousins Shield event the Mitchell Cup draw is still open and could be anyone’s title as the final day approaches.

In the bottom half of the Cousins Shield Men’s draw SquashGym took their place in the plate final beating Remuera 4-1. The local Masterton men were not able to take out the Hawke’s Bay men and fought right to the end but it was Hawke’s Bay day and they took the win 3-2. Herne Bay B took their win over Hamilton 4-1 and secured the final place in the plate draw tomorrow.

In the fourth round of Women’s Pool Play in the Mitchell Cup the bottom pool saw local players Masterton upset Khandallah with it all coming down to the final match and Masterton claiming the tie 3-2. In the second pool Royal Oak dominated Hamilton taking a 5-0 win in their tie. The top pool saw SquashGym continue to upset their higher seeded opponents taking out top seeds Remuera 3-2. This leaves the Women’s draw completely open with anything able to happen on the final day and the results not decided until the final tie.

In the top half of the Men’s draw the Lugton Park Men’s team continued to upset taking out the higher seeded Thorndon team taking the tie 3-2. Team Captain Phil Buscke-Somervell said “Cousins Shield is all about team spirit and we played with team spirit today and I’m proud of ma Boys” Henderson men will face Lugton Park after a 4-1 win in their tie against Mitchell Park. The top seeds have managed to get their way through to the final relatively unscathed with both teams claiming their first three games. SquashWays men took out the Devoy Men 5-0 whilst the Herne Bay A Men took out the North Shore Men 4-1.

The finals start at 1pm at the Masterton Squash Club and are set to be a great affair.
