Trans-Tasman Junior Test Series Teams Set
13 Apr 2017With any New Zealand versus Australian rivalry it is always a heated battle and next weeks matchup will be no different. 18 of New Zealand and Australia’s best junior squash players will be doing battle to claim the Trans-Tasman title at the Henderson Squash Club.
New Zealand has claimed the title for the past 2 years and will be looking to make it three in a row after a 19-17 win on the Gold Coast in 2016. With 2 junior male and 2 junior females in the Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 Age Groups and then 2 Under 19 Boys and 4 Under 19 Girls there are a number of close battles to be had by all with each player playing both the players in their relevant age group. The larger number of Under 19 Girls accounts for the World Junior Women’s Team Championships to be held in Tauranga in July this year and gives our female players more exposure to international competition.
Many of the players in both teams will have represented their countries previously but for the youngest players, the Under 13’s, this will be a great experience for them to be part of the atmosphere of international competition with most of them being part of this environment for the first time.
Stewart Carson High Performance Manager Squash Australia says "I think the Trans-Tasman is a fantastic opportunity for the Australian players to compete against New Zealand in a competitive team environment. The TTS is the highlight on the juniors calendar for Australians. With this being the girls turn at the World Juniors it also gives us a chance to test our top U19’s against New Zealand who will be hosting this event later in the year."
Shelley Kitchen High Performance Manager of Squash New Zealand says “On behalf of Squash NZ, I would like to wish the 2017 Executive Travel Trans-Tasman Test Series Team the best of luck against Australia. All the players have been working tremendously hard and this is one of the highlights of the year for all our emerging players. The Trans-Tasman test series event is a stepping stone to represent NZ at junior and senior world championship events in the future”
Leslie Ash of Executive Travel said “We are really excited to be a major sponsor of this team. As a provider of travel services to several national sporting organisations including Squash New Zealand we see the hard work and dedication that it takes to be at the top of your game and we wish all those competing every success.”
Games will start at 2pm on both Tuesday 18th April and Wednesday 19th April. The matches will be livestreamed and the links to watch them can be found below or here and here.
